Dodecene-1

Dodecene-1

Description

Dodecene-1 appears as a clear colorless liquid with a mild, pleasant odor. Insoluble in water and floats on water. Dodecene-1 is an alkene with the formula C10H21CH=CH2, consisting of a chain of twelve carbon atoms ending with a double bond. While there are many isomers of dodecene depending on which carbon the double bond is placed, this isomer is of greater commercial importance. It is classified as a Linear Alpha Olefin. Alpha-olefins are distinguished by having a double bond at the primary or alpha (α) position. Synonyms are: adacene 12, alpha-dodecene, α-dodecene, alpha-dodecylene, α-dodecylene, n-dodec-1-ene,

Applications

The location of a double bond enhances the reactivity of the compound. Dodecene-1 enters into all reactions typical of alpha olefins. It is useful for a number of applications, especially for the production of detergents. Other applications of Dodecene-1 include oxo alcohols, synthetic fatty acids, a special solvent, alkylated aromatics and said synthetic lubricants. Furthermore, it is used in the production of amines, amine oxides, epoxides, and mercaptans.
