Hexadecene-1

Hexadecene-1

Description

Hexadecene-1 is a colorless liquid. Hexadecene-1 is an unbranched sixteen-carbon alkene with one double bond between C-1 and C-2 (alpha position), classified as an alpha-olefin. Hexadecene-1, also known as 1-cetene, is a long-chain hydrocarbon and an alkene with the molecular formula CH2=CH(CH2)13CH3. It is one of many isomers of hexadecane but the one with the most industrial applications. Synonyms: 1-Hexadecylen; α-Hexadecene; n-Hexadec-1-ene; 1-Cetene; Hexadecylene-1; Hexadec-1-ene; 1-n-Hexadecene

Applications

It is utilized in blends for offshore drilling fluids. Hexadecene-1 is employed in the production of alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) surfactants, which are used in shampoos, liquid and powdered detergents, and liquid hand soaps. It’s used in a variety of applications as a finishing agent, process regulator, functional fluid, lubricant and lubricant additive. It can act as a comonomer in polymers such as low-density polyethylene, which yields improved strength, flexibility, and tearing resistance. Alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA) from hexadecene-1 are used as dispersants in lube oils and automatic transmission fluids, and as pour-point depressants in lube and crude oils. One of the largest applications of hexadecane-1 involves their use as paper-sizing agents in alkaline media. In a few specialized applications, hexadecene-1 is found in applications such as epoxides, metal working agents, halogenated olefins, and alkyl silanes.
