Octene-1

Octene-1

Description

Octene-1 is an organic compound with a formula CH2CHC6H13. It is an Octene isomer with many industrial applications. 1-octene appears as a colorless liquid, Insoluble and less dense than water. Its Vapors are heavier than air and may settle in depressions. The alpha position of the double bond endows the material with higher reactivity and thus useful chemical properties. Synonyms are: 1-C8H16 , 1-caprylene, α-octene, α-octylene, caprylene, n-1-octene.

Applications

It can be used as a comonomer in polyolefins and polyethylene. It is an ingredient in the production of oxo alcohols, synthetic fatty acids, octyl mercaptans, amines, organo aluminum compounds, and hydrogenated oligomers. Other uses include organic synthesis, surfactants, and plasticizers. In the production of linear aldehyde via oxo synthesis (hydroformylation) to give the C9 aldehyde (nonanal). Oxidation of this aldehyde yields the short-chain fatty acid; nonanoic acid. Hydrogenation of the same aldehyde yields the fatty alcohol 1-nonanol, which is used as a plasticizer.
